Debuted in late 2015, the adidas NMD is a rare game changer; the shoe that picked up where the Ultra Boost left off and took the sneaker world by storm. VP of Global Design Nic Galway, a 16-year veteran at adidas, also noted for his hand in the creation and development of Kanye West’s signature line, incorporated a touch of the past and the future into the NMD’s look. In regards to the former, DNA from the classic adidas Micro Pacer, Rising Star and Boston Super silhouettes served as inspirations. The use of adidas’ innovative Primeknit and BOOST technologies brought the NMD into the future. Though heralded for its stylistic flair, every detail on the model is purposeful, ultimately making it more functional for the wearer. That includes the LEGO-like blocks on the outsole – both a nod to the Micropacer and a means of providing the Primeknit with a level of structure because the shoe has no lining or reinforcements. The rubber insert on the heel provides similar reinforcement. “Everything is there for a reason, and if you were to remove one element, it wouldn’t work,” Galway told Sole Collector. “That’s important to me. It’s not decorating product. It’s really integrating, and the result is something familiar, but completely new." The response to the NMD has been deafening, as fans have clamored to stores to cop a pair. To date, the adidas NMD has released in over 120 variations, including collaborative editions, even more rare “Friends and Family” versions, and a myriad of general releases. It’s also been the base model for the Pharrell Williams-branded NMD bearing heartwarming “Human Race” messaging and the modified Chukka-inspired City Sock. Needless to say that adidas struck gold with this one.
