The Air Jordan 5 strongly led off Michael Jordan’s legendary 1990s run—in both basketball and footwear. Another masterpiece by Tinker Hatfield, the Jordan 5 introduced reflective material and a clear outsole to Air Jordans.
“It’s gotta be the shoes.” The famed catchphrase from Spike Lee, the director behind the legendary Air Jordan campaigns of the '80s, was a play on Michael Jordan becoming a force to be reckoned with across the NBA. Having emerged as the top player in the league, all eyes were on MJ and the shoes he rocked. For the Air Jordan 5, Tinker Hatfield found inspiration in the World War 2 Mustang fighter jet during its creation. Not to mention other innovations – a reflective 3M tongue, mesh netting on the tongue and upper, and a molded ankle collar.
