Don’t Sleep on These: Air Jordan 6 “Aqua”

Our case for why the “Aqua” Jordan 6 needs to be in your closet.

Zack Schlemmer

One of the most iconic Air Jordan colorways of all time, the “Aqua” color scheme is synonymous with the Air Jordan 8. And now it arrives on the Air Jordan 6, and the execution could not be any better.

Few sneakers ever designed are more “‘90s” than the Air Jordan 8, especially in its black, aqua blue, and purple look we all know and love as simply the “Aqua” colorway. First of all, the shoe itself is a quintessential example of early ‘90s Nike basketball sneaker design. The cross-straps, the chenille Jumpman logo on the tongue, the abstract graphics on the mudguard and outsole… the Air Jordan 8 just screams ‘90s in the best ways possible, and who doesn’t love the ‘90s? Add in the teal and purple accents, two colors that were trending in 1993 in a big way—think Charlotte Hornets Starter jackets (I had this one!)—and you have one of the greatest sneakers of the ‘90s.

OK, before this turns into a love letter to the Air Jordan 8 any more than it already has, let’s get back to the Air Jordan 6 in question. So why is the Jordan 6 “Aqua” great, too? And why should you spend your money on a pair? Because it’s one of the best, most slept-on Air Jordan retros of the year.

If you’re a fan of the Air Jordan 6, then these should be a no-brainer. First you get a classic Air Jordan 6 blueprint: an all-black upper with accents on the midsole and icy clear rubber on the outsole. And then you add in the perfect amount of aqua and purple accents for a tasteful look that seems like it could have actually been released in 1991 with the original set of Jordan 6 colorways.

If only Charlotte Hornets gear was trending in 1991, because we could have ended up with a Jordan 6 very similar to this. Alas, we didn’t get an “Aqua” colorway in 1991, but that’s OK, because now you can pick up your pair in 2023 at Stadium Goods.
