From the Vault: Patta x Nike Air Max 1 “Chlorophyll”

A close look at one of the most coveted Air Max 1s ever.

In sneakers, there are certain collaborations that just make sense both geographically and culturally speaking. Supreme and Nike have worked together on countless Air Force 1s over the years that honor both the streetwear brand and the shoe’s ties to New York City. If you travel from New York along the I-95 corridor up to New England, you’ll find that Bodega and Concepts have been acknowledging their respective Boston roots by collaborating with fellow New England brand New Balance for years.

But what about Patta and Nike?

It would be obvious to say that the two operate in very different worlds as the former is based in Amsterdam while Nike is headquartered in Beaverton, Oregon. But whatever Patta and Nike lack in terms of topographical synergy has never once affected their ability to create some of the most exciting Air Max 1 collaborations in sneakers. In fact, you could argue that Patta's work on the vintage performance running shoe has done more to popularize the Dutch boutique with today’s sneaker collectors than anything else.

With this month being the 35-year anniversary of the Air Max 1 and this Thursday being St. Patrick’s Day, what better shoe to dig out of our archives for a closer look at than the Patta x Nike Air Max 1 “Chlorophyll?”

Originally released back in September 2009, the Patta x Nike Air Max 1 “Chlorophyll” was created to honor Patta’s 5th anniversary. The white, grey, and green shoe is built in a premium blend of nubuck, canvas, and mesh, with the “Chlorophyll” green highlights in denim.

With this Air Max 1 and others like the “Lucky Green” and recent “Monarch,” Patta pretty much set the precedent for the modern lifestyle Air Max 1, and dare we say, a lot of other classic performance-turned-casual shoes in more recent times, too. The construction progressed the design of the shoe beyond its performance roots, and made it one of the most desirable releases of the Air Max 1 ever at the time. In that respect, not much has changed.
