2022 Sneaker Trend Prediction: Maroon Colorways

2022 Sneaker Trend Prediction: Maroon Colorways

If a few of these recent releases are any indication, dark red colorways are going to be hot in 2022. Get your pairs now.

Matt DeSciora

If the last few years in sneakers have taught us anything, it’s that trends are almost impossible to predict. Three-way collaborations? No one saw them coming. The Air Jordan 1 Mid’s dominance? A far-fetched thought once upon a time, but expected after Melody Ehsani created her “Fearless” colorway in 2019. The same could be said for the slip-on sandal wave that caught fire after Kanye West dropped the adidas Yeezy Slide.

Unexpected at first, each one of those trends has dominated the culture in the past 24 months, and will continue to do so in the future.

But as we get ready to begin another year, the question we’re asking is… “What’s next?”

We don’t have a crystal ball, but we’re confident that we’ll all be seeing red in 2022—dark red sneaker colorways, that is. If last year was about orange and neutral looks, then we’re placing bets that maroon will be the wave for this year based on some popular, recent releases from Nike, adidas, Jordan, and New Balance.

These are some of our favorite maroon colorways for 2022.

Air Jordan 1 High OG “Bordeaux”

The Air Jordan 1 High OG “Bordeaux” nods to the Air Jordan 7 of the same nickname with its maroon leather panels. It also features the same color block and metallic silver “Wings” logo as the Jordan 1 High Co.Jp “Metallic Navy” colorway.

Paris Saint Germain x Air Jordan 4

Since signing a sponsorship deal with Jordan Brand in 2018, Paris Saint Germain, an international soccer powerhouse based in, you guessed it, Paris, France, has shown a deft touch in picking classic Air Jordan models for collaborations. Exhibit A: this Air Jordan 4 by PSG, which features maroon accenting and an overall vibe that screams “retro,” even though it was released in 2020.

Women’s Air Jordan 1 Mid SE “Gold Pendants”

The Air Jordan 1 Mid has been trending heavy since late 2019, and we don’t foresee that changing in 2022. So it’s best you take our advice and grab a pair to start off the new year on the right foot. Colorways like the “Gold Pendants,” a women’s-exclusive release with sweet maroon accenting and flashy gold jewels on its design that nods to Melody Ehsani’s version of the shoe, are a great place to start your Jordan 1 Mid journey.

New Balance 57/40 “Garnet”

The New Balance 57/40 is a modern interpretation of the 574 model, and a silhouette gaining popularity with each release. This “Garnet” number features buttery suede panels in a rich dark red hue that switches up from the brand’s signature grey color scheme.

Patta x Nike Air Max 1 “Rush Maroon”

In case you need confirmation that maroon colorways are trending, Patta chose the wine-colored hue as a color option on its popular Nike Air Max 1 collaboration from 2021. The Amsterdam sneaker boutique’s track record speaks for itself.

Ivy Park x adidas Ultra Boost “Maroon”

Beyonce and her Ivy Park sportswear line were early adopters of the maroon colorway trend, collaborating with adidas on this “Maroon” Ultra Boost back in January 2020. As is always the case with anything “Bey” associated herself with, the Texas native was well ahead of the maroon sneaker trend. We’ll forever be playing catch-up to Beyonce’s power moves.

A Ma Maniére x Air Jordan 1 High OG

The second of A Ma Maniére’s two high-profile Jordan Brand collaborations in 2021, the Air Jordan 1 High OG features a luxurious design like no other for the vintage basketball shoe, with a fine cracked leather upper, snakeskin details, and a quilted collar and interior lining. Oh yeah, did we mention plenty of maroon accents, too?

Women’s Nike Dunk High “Team Red”

Dressed in a similar white-and-red color block to the Nike Dunk’s original “St. John’s” colorway, the Women’s Dunk High “Team Red” has maroon leather panels and Swoosh branding instead of the fiery red accenting that found its way onto the retro colorway, which makes it a tad more versatile, in our opinion. The “Team Red” also features a decidedly vintage, aged look with its Sail leather base and rubber midsole, which is right on-trend for 2022.

Stadium Goods Crew Socks “Wine”

The only sock you’ll need to compliment any maroon sneaker is a pair of our Stadium Goods Crew Socks in the “Wine” colorway. Because one could never have too much maroon on their feet. Toast to 2022!
