Air Jordan 6 Retro
Of all the great Air Jordans in existence, only one can lay claim to being Michael Jordan’s first “championship” shoe: the Air Jordan 6. The classic basketball sneaker was released in 1991 by Nike, and was Jordan’s signature model when he and the Chicago Bulls won their first NBA Championship. No other shoe in the collection can hold that distinction.
The Jordan 6 debuted in five original colorways: the “White/Infrared,” “Black/Infrared,” “Carmine,” “Sport Blue,” and “Maroon.” Jordan wore the first three Bulls-inspired colorways in the NBA, but not the “Sport Blue” and “Maroon,” which has only helped the design’s lore in sneaker collecting culture.
In the Jordan 6, “The GOAT” averaged a league-best 31.5 points per game in the ‘90-91 NBA season. He also earned his second career NBA MVP Award in the Jordan 6, as well. As you can see, the Jordan 6 was clearly a huge component of the magic of Jordan’s time on the hardwood in the early ‘90s, but it had plenty of memorable moments away from the court, too.
The Air Jordan 6’s release was accompanied by a series of now-classic commercials starring Spike Lee as Mars Blackmon, the sneaker-obsessed character Lee portrayed in his film, “She’s Gotta Have It” from 1986. In one memorable spot, Mars, wearing the Air Jordan 6 “Black/Infrared,” summons a genie (played by Little Richard) and wishes to fly like Mike. Another famous commercial finds Mars attending an NBA Finals game to find out what makes Michael Jordan the best basketball player in the world.
In recent years, the Jordan 6’s legacy has been continued through collaborations. Some of the notable entities to work on new colorways of the shoe include Travis Scott, Aleali May, and Paris Saint Germaine, the storied soccer club.
The Air Jordan 6 is an iconic shoe on and off the court. It is the only Air Jordan that can lay claim to having been the first championship Jordan model. That alone makes the sneaker iconic. When you consider the impressive list of Jordan 6 collaborations, it’s pretty clear the shoe is one of the greatest sneakers in the world.
