“The hunt” is what draws many into the hobby of sneaker collecting. So naturally, you can imagine the amount of desire for an Air Jordan 1 created in 1985 exclusively for close friends and family of Michael Jordan. Only a handful of pairs of this elusive shoe are out in the wild, and there are even some aficionados who are unconvinced of it existing at all. A few years ago, someone claimed to have found the Friends & Family shoe in question sitting conspicuously on a thrift store shelf for $10. They turned out legit—the find of a century if there ever was one.
The rest of us who haven’t been as lucky in our decades-long search shouldn’t be too discouraged, though, because this Holiday season, Jordan Brand is slyly releasing a Jordan 1 that mimics the design’s black leather upper with gold accents dubbed the “Black/Metallic Gold” colorway.
Loose connections to the triple-OG Friends & Family Jordan 1 aside, the new “Black/Metallic Gold” that is releasing on November 30, 2020 is one of the most luxurious takes of the iconic shoe in recent memory. Its shiny black patent leather paneling with contrasting gold accenting on the Swoosh and “Wings” branding collar will remind some collectors of the Jordan 1 Mid from 2003 that Cassie wore in the “Me & U” music video. A few subtle updates are applied to the modern release, though. This time around, Jordan Brand bumped the “Black/Metallic Gold” to a high-top, and is giving it a standard “Wings” emblem stamped on the collar a lá the original Jordan 1, whereas in 2003 it displayed a jeweled “Wings” logo.
There’s really not a whole lot else to say about something as refined as the Air Jordan 1 “Black/Metallic Gold.” It’s a great colorway, and if nothing else, a remedy for the serious case of FOMO we’ve all been experiencing ever since we discovered an original Friends & Family Jordan 1 was created by Nike many years ago.
The Air Jordan 1 High OG “Black/Metallic Gold” is available now at Stadium Goods.
