Air was bigger than ever for Nike in 2017, with the debut of the VaporMax, the 20th anniversary celebration for the big-bubbled Air Max 97, and the major return of a classic basketball model that proudly advertises its cushioning more than any sneaker ever, the Air More Uptempo.
Already one of the most audacious sneaker designs of all time thanks to its blatant "AIR" branding plastered across the upper and full-length visible Air Max units, the More Uptempo somehow got even more irreverent in 2017. It wasn't wild colorways that made the shoe more neck-breaking than ever, but actual redesigns of the upper, which replaced the classic AIR text with all-new lettering for a few collabs and special editions. Let's recap how the Air More Uptempo got even more bold in 2017 with a look back at the most memorable releases of the year.

If it wasn't for the OFF-WHITE x Nike collection that came later in 2017, the epic team-up by Supreme and Nike Sportswear for the Air More Uptempo in three colorways would no doubt have been considered by most as the collab of the year. And if you're a Supreme fiend, they still were. Of the three "Suptempo" colorways in metallic gold, triple black, and red/white, the latter is fetching the highest resale prices, right up there with most of the most sought-after OFF-WHITE x Nike sneakers, in fact.

If you wanted all the hype of the Suptempos without all the flash of the red/white and gold colorways, Supreme had you covered with a comparatively more subtle "Triple Black" colorway.

When the kids at the Doernbecher Children's hospital get their hands on Nike sneakers for the annual charitable Freestyle Collection they always come out colorful and thoroughly unique, so when the sneaker world first learned that the Air More Uptempo would be included in the 2017 set, everyone couldn't wait to see how crazy it would be. The design by Brody Miller certainly didn't disappoint, with its bright blue premium nubuck upper, icy sole, vibrant striped laces, and his initials "BPM" that also double to stand for "beats per minute" across each shoe.

The big return for the Air More Uptempo in 2017 was capped off with a special "City Pack", featuring the shoe repping Chicago, New York City, and Atlanta. The ATL colorway nods to Scottie Pippen's gold medal run with the Dream Team in 1996 (where he wore the OG "Olympic" colorway), with a white, dark green, and gold color combination that references the official colors of the Atlanta Summer Olympics. A Georgia peach on the left heel and the city's area code on the right finish off the Hotlanta Uptempos.

If there was going to be a city pack for the Air More Uptempo, there had to be a colorway for the city where the man that made them famous, Scottie Pippen, played. Nike delivered with the Chicago edition, proudly displaying "CHI" in place of the original "AIR" text across the upper in a bright red Bulls colorway.
Nike Air More Uptempo "NYC"

No sneaker pack could be without a colorway for the mecca of the culture, and Nike came through with the Air More Uptempo for New York City. The "NYC" Air More Uptempo comes rocking a colorway to match your Yankees hat. A must have for NYC sneakerheads no matter what borough you live in.
