If ever there was a stroke of marketing genius, it was Nike creating their own holiday, Air Max Day. The day the original Air Max 1 released in 1987, March 26th, has in a few short years become one of everyone's favorite days of the year to look forward to — at least if you're entrenched in sneaker culture. While it's clearly a shameless marketing campaign at its core, it's still a better holiday than Columbus Day.
Ever since this special edition Air Max 1 dropped for the first Air Max Day in 2014, the five year's since have seen a plethora of special releases from Nike in observance of their holiday. In celebration of Air Max Day 2019, we'd take an in-depth look at what is arguably the greatest Air Max Day release to date: the Air Max 1 x Air Jordan 1 pack by atmos.
Talk about genius, that's exactly what atmos' idea for this epic pack was. Released in celebration of Air Max Day 2017, the famed Japanese sneaker retailers behind many of the greatest Air Max collaborations really outdid themselves with this pack. The catalyst for the collection was their Air Max 1 "Elephant" — the beautiful colorway that originally released in 2006 and was the winning vote-getter in Nike's Vote Back campaign in 2016. The initiative allowed fans to pick from hundreds of Air Max models and colorways to bring back for Air Max Day 2017, and this was what we all wanted: the Air Max 1 by atmos featuring the elephant print from the Air Jordan 3 with jade green accents.
With the famous Air Max 1 on the way back, atmos decided to up the ante. Going off the concept of the Air Max 1 borrowing the elephant print from the Air Jordan 3, they decided to create an Air Jordan 3 borrowing the color scheme of one of their other most iconic and coveted Air Max 1s, the "Safari" colorway from 2003 (which also had just returned the year before). For one more special touch, the Air Max 1s in the pack received a bonus detail not found on its solo release, a smoky clear outsole with a Jumpman logo visible underneath to intertwine the two legendary shoes even more.
The result was obviously a success. The pack released only at atmos and select tier zero Nike accounts, which combined with its general greatness, has made it the most coveted Air Max Day release for collectors of all things Air Max and Air Jordan. After checking out beauty shots of the pack here, we're confident that you'll find it hard to argue this is the very best Air Max Day release yet.
