Have you hugged your foot today? Created by Tinker Hatfield during his hot streak of sneaker design for Nike during the late 1980s and early ‘90s, the landmark Huarache technology is intended to offer a lightweight, foot-hugging feel. This is achieved by the use of stretchy neoprene material in a bootie design around your foot and ankle, which Tinker was inspired to use after noticing how the inserts for water skis securely and comfortably held your feet in place. Huarache tech debuted in the Nike Air Huarache runner and Air Flight Huarache basketball shoe in 1991, and has since been utilized across virtually all Nike categories from cross-training, to soccer, to modern lifestyle sneakers. Nike Huaraches have become a mainstay in the brand’s casual line, with the Air Huarache right up there with always-in-production greats like the Air Max 1 and Air Max 90. Simply put, your sneaker collection can’t quite be complete without a pair of Huaraches.
