The story behind the popular ASICS running shoe. It’s not as old as you may think!
Matt DeSciora
With retro running sneakers trending at an all time high in 2023, it was finally time for ASICS to dip into its archive to bring back its own styles from years past. Instead of the Gel-Lyte III and various Gel-Saga silhouettes that most of us were already familiar with from the brand’s collaborations with Kith from the early 2010s, ASICS decided to preserve other, less heralded sneakers from the same era in reaction to the Y2K-style trend. The move paid off, because over the last few months, few sneakers have been as hot as tech-looking ASICS, none more so than the brand’s GT-2160 model.
Inspired by a shoe from the ASICS archives, the GT-2160 has already been used in collaborations with both Kith and Dime, which says pretty much all you need to know about why we’re dedicating a blog post to the sneaker.
Read on to find out a little more about the GT-2160’s inspiration, its top collaborations and colorways, and why you should be keeping a close eye on it for the rest of 2023.

Background
The ASICS GT-2160 certainly looks like it could have been released in the early 2000s, but in actuality it made its debut in 2023. The model’s throwback looks can be attributed to the fact that its design is based on the ASICS GT-2000 that debuted in the early 2010s. The GT-2160 retains most of its predecessor’s design language, including its sleek profile and wavy-like forefoot structure. It also features other details that were found on many of ASICS’s early 2010s sneakers, like big mesh, a segmented midsole, and Gel cushioning inserts.

Notable GT-2160 Colorways
Since the GT-2160 is a new sneaker, there aren’t a ton of colorways to write about. But there are some notable ones worth mentioning (and certainly owning, but that should be a given.) The GT-2160 debuted in two colorways, and they are the “White/Pure Silver” and the “White/Shamrock.” There’s also the summer-inspired “Cream/Solar Power.” As far as collaborations, like we mentioned in the beginning, the GT-2160 has already been tapped by Montreal based skate company Dime and Ronnie Fieg’s Kith boutique. Fashion designer Cecile Bahnsen put her own unique spin on the model with a modified upper, which quickly sold out everywhere it was released.
Y2K ‘Till Forever
With the Y2K trend showing no signs of slowing down, now is the time to explore your style with the GT-2160. Time will tell just how many more colorways and collaborations the silhouette will be a part of, but for now, we suggest jumping on the already released styles while you can.
