Closer Look: Air Jordan 1 "Shattered Backboard"

The legend of the "Shattered Backboard" is one of the most iconic moments in sneaker history, and it all began in a small exhibition game in Trieste, Italy, back in 1985. It was the summer after Michael Jordan's rookie season, and he was on a Nike tour playing with an Italian club team, Stefanel Trieste. In a moment that would become legendary, Jordan threw down a powerful dunk that shattered the glass backboard, sending a shower of glass across the court. The jersey he wore that day—a standout black and orange uniform—would become the inspiration for one of the most sought-after Air Jordan 1 colorways of all time.

The 2015 Original: A Legend Is Born

Ten years ago, in 2015, Jordan Brand first paid homage to that pivotal moment with the release of the Air Jordan 1 "Shattered Backboard." This sneaker was an instant classic, not just for its unique color blocking inspired by that Italian jersey, but for the impeccable quality of its construction. Sneakerheads marveled at the incredibly soft, tumbled leather that set a new standard for a retro Jordan 1. The shoe's insoles featured a custom shattered backboard graphic, a subtle nod to the moment that inspired it all. The 2015 release became a holy grail for collectors, and its value on the resale market skyrocketed, cementing its status as a timeless piece of sneaker culture.

The 2025 Retro: A Modern Take on a Classic

Now, in 2025, Jordan Brand is bringing back the "Shattered Backboard" for its first retro run. While it captures the spirit and colorway of the original, there are some key differences that separate the two releases. Here’s what you need to know about the 2025 pair.

What's different?

  • Shape: The 2025 retro features a more upright shape, a change from the 2015 version that is more in line with the brand's "Remastered V2" silhouette.

  • Color: While the color code is the same, the shades are slightly different. The new "Starfish" orange is a bit darker, and the white on the midsole and underlays is a starker white compared to the creamier "Sail" color of the 2015 original.

  • Leather Quality: The leather quality on the 2015 release is considered top notch. While the 2025 retro still boasts high-quality leather that surpasses many general releases, it may not feel as soft and supple as the first edition.

  • Packaging: The 2025 release comes with a special "shattered" graphic on the box, a new detail that adds to the storytelling of this iconic shoe.

The Air Jordan 1 "Shattered Backboard" retro is scheduled for a U.S. release on August 23, 2025, but Stadium Goods has pairs in stock and ready to ship.
