The way the sneaker crumbles: A detailed look at both colorways of the anticipated Off-White x Air Jordan 2.

In history, Air Jordan 2 collaborations have been few and far between. Vashtie Kola, a New York City multihyphenate, became the first woman to collaborate with Jordan Brand when she gave Michael Jordan’s second signature shoe a “Violette’ makeover in 2010. A few years later, in 2016, fashion designer Don C treated the Air Jordan 2 to a luxe makeover that leaned into its Made in Italy heritage. Flash forward to today and it feels like the sneaker community has waited the appropriate amount of time it takes for a collaborator, or Jordan Brand if we’re being honest, to make the Air Jordan 2 their own.
Virgil Abloh—who else?—is up for the task.
The Off-White x Air Jordan 2 Low, which releases on November 12th and is available early at Stadium Goods, arrives in two colorways: “Black/Varsity Royal” and “Chicago.” The “Chicago” is the “OG” vibe of the two. The white/red style is based on the original colorway of the Air Jordan 2, of which Michael wore frequently, and often in the same low-top silhouette, with the Chicago Bulls.
Speaking of Michael wearing the Air Jordan 2, the inspiration for the entire project stems from an archival pair of Jordan 2s from “Money’s” personal collection. Which answers a few questions about the shoe’s one-of-a-kind, vintage details.
First, both the “Black/Varsity Royal” and “Chicago” colorways of the Off-White x Air Jordan 2 Low feature a faux-crumbled midsole that mimics the decaying look of one of Michael’s game-worn pairs from the ‘80s. Next, Michael’s signature is printed on both shoes, albeit in different locations. Why the difference, you ask? According to Abloh, this simulates the idea that Jordan would’ve unknowingly signed a pair of his just-played-in Jordan 2s in different locations. Genius.
