The sneaker world simply wouldn’t be what it is today without Air Jordans. You could write an entire book on how much the Air Jordan 1 changed the way people think about, buy, and sell sneakers since its debut in 1985. The way the Air Jordan 11 changed how luxurious you could make a basketball shoe look is also essay-worthy. The clear window in the Air Jordan 2010? OK, so they can’t all be hits, but you get the idea.

Jordan Brand’s influence on the sneaker industry is massive. One of the biggest aspects of how and why Air Jordans have changed sneakers forever is no doubt its progressive, sometimes bold, always interesting use of new and unique materials and patterns.

The list of motifs Air Jordans have introduced to sneakers is long. Everything from faux-lizard skin on the Air Jordan 2 to reflective tongues and clear outsoles on the Air Jordan 5, to patent leather on the Air Jordan 11, to intricately embroidered designs on the Air Jordan 23 and much, much more, Jordan Brand has always been at the forefront of intriguing “decorations” for basketball sneakers.

This leads us to the specific design element we’re here to check out today, the one on this anticipated Air Jordan 1 High OG. Of course, we’re talking about elephant print, which takes a starring role for the first time ever on the Air Jordan 1 High OG with this anticipated colorway.

Of all of Jordan Brand’s signature motifs, elephant print is arguably the most significant. The pattern debuted on the iconic Air Jordan 3 in 1988, and since, has appeared on countless other Air Jordans, and even a lot of Jordan Brand apparel. The pattern eventually made it onto other Nike releases, including the legendary Supreme x Nike SB Dunks from 2002 and the atmos x Nike Air Max 1, just to name the two most notable.

With so many elephant-print-clad sneakers out there, it’s almost amazing that it took Jordan Brand this long to prominently feature the pattern on the Air Jordan 1 High. Seems like a no-brainer, right? But as you can see from these detailed shots by our photo team of the upcoming release, the wait was worth it.
