From the Vault: Nike SB Dunk Low “Shark”

A look back at one of the first Nike SB Dunks ever.

Matt DeSciora

Debuted in 2002, the Nike SB Dunk was originally designed in colorways by some of the most recognizable names in skateboarding, including popular skate shops like Supreme and legendary skaters like Danny Supa. But for every big name attached to the design of an SB Dunk colorway from the shoe’s original “Orange Box” era, there were lesser-known colorways that attracted the attention of both skateboarders and sneaker collectors. The subject of today’s From the Vault feature, the Nike SB Dunk Low “Shark,” is definitely one of those sneakers.

Not much backstory is known about the “Shark,” so this won’t be some incredibly long or informative essay on another classic SB Dunk from yesteryear. But there are still some interesting things to say about the colorway. For starters, it features a two-tone design like the two other mysterious Nike SB Dunks that it shares a release month with: the “Flash” and “Loden.”

As for the “Shark’s” nickname, that has to do with the shoe’s official colorway, which is Nightshade/Team Red/Shark. The “Shark” hue refers to the color of the shoe’s grey details, but the blue, grey, and blood-red color combination can certainly call to mind a shark attacking its prey in the ocean.

Today, the Nike SB Dunk Low “Shark” is as rare as it gets as far as SB Dunks are concerned—especially in deadstock condition. The colorway is currently only available in a size 8.5 at Stadium Goods… for now. Because Nike SB is keen on not re-releasing original SB Dunk colorways, there’s a good chance that that 8.5 pair is the only size we’ll have of the “Shark” Dunk in stock for a while… or ever. Catch them while you can!
