From the Vault: The 2006 Supreme x Nike SB Blazer Mid Pack

We look back at the still-epic three-colorway pack of Blazers by Supreme and how it influenced luxury-inspired sneakers for years to come.

Matt DeSciora

For much of its nearly thirty-year existence, Supreme has released products that placate its mid-90s roots. The heavyweight tees and sweatshirts, flannels, and cargo pants that form the core of Supreme’s seasonal collections are all inspired by what skaters, rappers, graffiti artists, and other downtown consigliere wore around 1994, the year the brand opened its doors at 274 Lafayette Street in New York City.

But Supreme is hardly a one-trick pony. After all, you don’t become a $2.1 billion dollar company by being narrow sighted. So for every military-inspired utility vest that looks as if it arrived on a time machine from ‘96, Supreme will serve up a curveball or three that catches everyone off guard.

You could go up and down the brand’s collections year-by-year and find many instances of it deviating from its signature, gritty, ‘90s street aesthetic. But if you’re looking for one of Supreme’s most influential and creative releases, look no further than its Nike SB Blazer collaboration from 2006.

Released in three colorways, “Black,” “Varsity Red,” and “Sail,” the Supreme SB Blazer champions a luxury-inspired vibe that only the likes of Harlem’s ultimate fashion customizer, Dapper Dan, could have dreamed up during his 1980s heyday.

Each shoe features a plush, quilted leather construction that’s matched with a faux snakeskin Swoosh. The gold lace tips accentuate the collaboration’s premium vibe, but the golden, Supreme-branded ankle ring and accompanying Gucci-inspired heel stripe send the look over the top.

The Supreme x Nike SB Blazer collection is significant because it marked only the second time the brand had collaborated with Nike SB on a shoe other than the Dunk. (Supreme and Nike SB released the Delta Force 3/4 in 2004, which was largely slept-on in the sneaker community.) Its co-sign of the Blazer, a vintage basketball shoe that had been adopted in skate culture in the 1970s and ‘80s, helped popularize it with collectors in the 2000s, which later led to the Blazer being part of groundbreaking collaborations with Off-White, Sacai, READYMADE, and more, in recent years.

While a bit of a stretch, it isn’t all that far-fetched to think of the Supreme Blazer as the conduit to the brand’s later collaborations with high end brands Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co., and Burberry. The quality of materials and attention to detail on the Blazer was unlike anything offered by Nike SB or otherwise at the time of its release, which gave it crossover appeal with sneaker collectors, fashionistas, and the same skaters and hip-hop stars from the ‘90s that Supreme always shows love to.
