The detailed looks at each of the 11 jaw-dropping lots included in the "ORIGINAL AIR: Michael Jordan Game-Worn and Player Exclusive Sneaker Rarities" auction by Christie's and Stadium Goods continues with a focus on Lot #2, the Air Jordan 1 TYPS PE.
Most of you reading this know that Michael Jordan wore the Air Jordan 1 for his 1984-85 rookie season with the Chicago Bulls. What you may not know is that his version of the Air Jordan 1 differed slightly from the pairs you could buy at retail in 1985. The majority of the Air Jordan 1s that young MJ wore on court were modified for his comfort, featuring a slightly lower collar height. Not noticeable unless you look very closely, Jordan's player exclusive version was slightly lower than the Air Jordan 1 High that released at retail, and slightly higher than the Air Jordan 1 Mid you know today. Jordan's pairs were also different sizes for each foot: 13 for the left foot and 13.5 for the right.
Today, finding an original retail pair of the Air Jordan 1 from 1985 is hard enough. Finding one of Jordan's player exclusives made just for him is near impossible. But that's exactly what is up for bid in the Original Air auction, an Air Jordan 1 TYPS PE in the iconic "Chicago" colorway.
"TYPS" stands for "Tong Yang Player Sample." Tong Yang is the factory in South Korea where they, and many Nike shoes at the time, were produced. The "TYPS" denotation can be found printed on the inner collar of each shoe. Also noted is the size 13 and 13.5 for opposite feet.
This Air Jordan 1 TYPS is in unworn condition and has a Michael Jordan signature on the inner left collar circa 1986-87. The signature is authenticated by JSA and a Letter of Authenticity is included
The ORIGINAL AIR: Michael Jordan Game-Worn and Player Exclusive Sneaker Rarities auction is live July 30-August 13, 2020.
